In April we welcomed the musicians of Raga Maqam into our studios and rehearsal spaces. The cutting edge, 15-member ensemble led by Amir ElSaffar and Brooklyn Raga Massive, explores the confluences of Indian classical Raga and Maqam: the improvisational structure of the Middle East, North Africa, and Central Asia. Their week-long residency of intensive jamming and experimentation leads up to a weekend of recording in Studio 9 at Porches, a state-of-the-art recording studio right across the street from MASS MoCA at The Porches Inn.
